He does not directly appear in this story, though; the plot of this story concerns people living on Mars as the unwilling hostages of Terraform-Kluster, a satellite orbiting Mars where Landau and his clique live and direct the ongoing terraforming project happening on the surface of Mars.
Schismatrix is centrally about a political and violent conflict between two general factions of humanity, one of whom prefer genetic alterations over the cybernetic modifications of the other. Other thinkers have noted this connection. I thought it was pretty good, but definitely more intellectually stimulating than entertaining. There is plenty of political manipulation and deception. I came across this book because alastair reynolds rated it so highly at the end of his book Galactic North.
Lindsay sees her as a person who has taken embodiment to its conceptual end. Schismatrix is a wild, ideas-a-sentence ride, a frighteningly vivid look at three hundred years in the future.

It’s also schis,atrix only one told from the perspective of a Mechanist rather than a Shaper although there is one character who is both, but he begins as a Shaper so I’m not sure he counts. Responses to Reality in Western Literature Bguce chapters are sometimes several years apart in the timeline with no decent grounding of what happened during the intervening years or why. Where the “Rose” comes from I don’t know, but the “Spider” serves as a neat symbol of her approach to ensuring her own survival; she’s a Mechanist, and an old one, so her body has been extensively modified with cybernetics.
Overall, I enjoyed Schismatrix Plus, but I had some issues which dropped it from the four or five star book I initially thought I was reading. But then it got weirder and weirder and it started to grasp me very deeply.

The Schismatrix plus version was a better read; actually my note for the book is 4 which mecomes 5 with the stories particulaly the Swarm and Spider Rose. I loved the way Sterling balanced almost overwhelming creativity with cool, calm, and precise prose.
The latest album, Schismatrix Redux is a follow up to their release, Schismatrix. Not generally schhismatrix of sterilng “space opera” guy, but this one was fascinating. Fortunately, this volume also contains Sterling’s short fiction set within the same universe. I loved the way he bruc the inhuman stretch of time that the book covers almost yhears with unexpected jumps forward in time, which to kept the story fresh and new.

This is science fiction of the most ambitious and wide-ranging kind, with constructions of future humanity taken as far as imagination could take them without crossing the line into all-out fantasy.
World building is almost nonexistent in Schismatrix but present to schismatrx degree in his short stories which are set in the same universe. The hruce seeks ways out of problems with humanism, in particular, what it sees as entrenched dualisms reaching back to Cartesian philosophy. The main character, Abelard Lindsay, escapes but is subsequently exiled to a lunar colony where he must rebuild the social and political network cut off by his would-be assassins. Sterling’s novel follows a single mover-shaker through the turbulent politics and world of the far future human panoply spread across the solar system.
Especially when the main character is basically a con-man of sorts for most of the novel. Definitely the kind of SF that makes you think in different ways and adds to your thoughts of what might eventually really come to pass with humanity in the future. Sterling doesn’t himself envision such another world, but his novel convincingly shows that no degree of technological self-transformation can in and of itself change the gloomy parameters of this one.

Schismatrix by Bruce Sterling
The Investor Peace does not last forever, though, and tensions between Shapers and Mechanists eventually start to rise when the Investors play the factions against one another. The representation of radical human evolution stems not just from the sciences of evolutionary biology but from complexity theory.
On what side of the embodiment vs. Sterling’s highly detailed future Worlds and Races reminds me of Iain M. Shapers and Mechanists have their agendas, as do a variety of other groups, including aliens calling themselves the Investors. Thanks for telling us about the problem.
